Title

WAHSP/BILAND: web application for (bilingual) historical sentiment mining in public media

Description

WAHSP/BILAND is a research tool for historians that uses textual data of news media from the period 1863-1940 of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin as input material. One can search with single query terms or with combinations thereof. Apart from showing the articles that match the query, the results can be visualized by word clouds of single articles together with sentiment words highlighted, or by a word cloud of the whole result set together with newspaper statistics derived from their metadata. WAHSP/BILAND enables historians to collect and process large bi-lingual (Dutch and German) sets of opinionated text-data from news media and extract discourse identity and intensity patterns in two different countries with different scripts (e.g. Latin and Gothic). This tool offers a unique opportunity for non-technical humanities researchers to perform a new kind of historical e-research for studying changing opinions, notions and perceptions regarding public health and policy issues. The text mining tools for opinion/sentiment extraction that form the technological base for WAHSP/BILAND have been developed within the NTU/STEVIN DuOMAn project. The technology includes algorithms and tools for identification of polarity (positive/support or negative/criticism), sources (opinion-holders), frequency of items and specific targets of discourses. The tools and subjectivity lexicons are implemented as modules of ‘Fietstas’ 2, an web service for text analysis. Fietstas also provides other essential text processing modules (morphological normalization, format and encoding reconciliation, named entity recognition and normalization, etc.) and visualization modules (interactive word clouds and timelines). Fietstas has been developed and is being used for processing of large-scale datasets in the context of several projects, such as DuOMAn. A text translation service based on Machine Learning can be used to translate existing lexicons and documents between Dutch and German (both directions). The web application uses this functionality of Fietstas to leverage interactive creation, expansion and refinement of lexicons specific to the user’s research questions and needs. For BILAND new bilingual and biscriptural lexicons have been developed. The application uses the visualization features of Fietstas to allow users to examine the research domain along the dimensions of time, context, and the identity and frequency of the discourse. WAHSP/BILAND is meant to be generic and testable in all domains, where analysis of topics, contexts and attitudes in large volumes of text is needed.

Description

Texcavator enables a researcher to use full-text search on the newspaper archive of the Dutch Royal Library. On top of that, it allows for visualizations like word clouds, time lines and heat maps. It also provides services to enhance your search experience like filtering, stopword removal, normalization and stemming. Texcavator also gives access to ShiCo (Shifting Concepts), developed by Carlos Martinez Ortiz (NL eScience Center).ShiCo is a tool for visualizing time shifting concepts. We refer to a concept as the set of words which are related to a given seed word. ShiCo uses a set of semantic models (word2vec) spanning a number of years to explore how concepts change over time -- words related to a given concept at time t=0 may differ from the words related to the same concept at time t=n . Texcavator originated from the earlier text mining applications WAHSP and BiLand. During the Translantis project, the application was renamed to Texcavator and further developed by the UvA (Fons Laan). In May 2014, development was taken over by the Netherlands eScience Center (Janneke van der Zwaan). From April 2015 onwards, Texcavator was developed at the Digital Humanities lab of Utrecht University (Julian Gonggrijp and Martijn van der Klis). ShiCo was created in cooperation with the NL eScience Center (Carlos Martinez Ortiz).

Title

SHEBANQ: System for HEBrew Text: ANnotations for Queries and Markup

Description

The WIVU (Werkgroep Informatica Vrije Universiteit) Hebrew Text Database contains the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) version of the text of the Hebrew Bible. Portions of other Semitic languages are included as well: the Aramaic sections of the Old Testament, two Syriac versions, and annotated portions of the Syriac and Aramaic translations. All these texts have been enriched with features that primarily result from linguistic analysis. The database can be queried by means of a language that is optimized to deal with data that is modeled as objects + features. SHEBANQ builds a bridge between the linguistically annotated Hebrew Text corpus and biblical scholars by (1) making this text, including its annotations, available to scholars; (2) demonstrating how queries can function to address research questions; the query saver and the metadata added to them will be a growing repository of valuable best practices of what queries are used in addressing research questions and how they contribute to answering these questions; (3) giving textual scholarship a more empirical basis, by creating the opportunity that claims made in scholarly articles (e.g.: “this syntactic pattern is not attested elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible”) can be accompanied by the unique identifiers that refer to the saved queries that have led to the claim. The WIVU database is a resource under long-term development. New features are being added, new corrections are being made over time.

Title

MIMORE: Microcomparative Morphosyntax Research Tool

Description

With the MIMORE search engine one can search three databases together, with text strings, part of speech tags and syntactic variables. The researcher can combine categories and features into complex tags or use predefined tags. All categories and features are defined in ISOcat. Since all sentences have a location code, the morphosyntactic phenomena found in a set of sentences resulting from a search can be automatically plotted on a geographic map. It is possible to include more than one morphosyntactic phenomenon in one map, thus visualizing potential correlations between these phenomena. There is also a user-friendly function to export the data to a statistical program. The data in DynaSAND, the dynamic syntactic atlas of the Dutch dialects (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/sand/ (link is external)), were collected between 2000 and 2005 by oral interviews (fieldwork and telephone) in about 300 locations across The Netherlands, Belgium and a small part of north-west France. Dialect speakers were asked to judge and/or translate some 150 test sentences. DynaSAND makes available the full recordings and transcriptions of these interviews. Together, the DynSAND data cover the syntactic variation in the Dutch language area in the left periphery of the clause (the complementizer system and complementizer agreement), variation in subject pronoun form depending on syntactic position, subject pronoun doubling, cliticization on YES/NO, the reflexive system, fronting constructions (Wh-clauses, relative clauses, topicalization), word order and morphological variation in verb clusters, negation and quantification. The data in DiDDD (Diversity in Dutch DP Design; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/diddd/ (link is external)) were collected between 2005 and 2009 with oral and written interviews in about 200 locations in the Dutch language area, with a methodology highly parallel to DynaSAND. The data involve translations of and judgements on test sentences. For 29 interviews there are sound recordings which have been lined up with their transcriptions. The DIDDD data cover the morphosyntactic variation within nominal groups, in particular possessives, partitives, noun ellipsis, the demonstrative system, the numeral modification system, what-for constructions, quantitative er, adjectival inflection, negation and exclamatives. The data in GTRP (Goeman, Taeldeman, van Reenen Project; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/mand/database/ (link is external)) were collected between 1979 and 2000 with oral interviews in about 600 locations in the Dutch language area. Informants were asked to translate words or short sentences. Part of the transcriptions have been lined up with the sound recordings. The morphological data in GTRP include plural forms of nouns, diminutives, gender on nouns and adjectives, comparatives, superlatives, verbal inflection including participles, subject, object and possessive pronouns.

Title

MIGMAP: Detailed interactive mapping of migration in The Netherlands in the 20th century.

Description

MIGMAP is a web application that can show migration flow between Dutch municipalities. The user first chooses generation (forward or backward in time) and gender, while subsequently the migration map of The Netherlands related to an interactively pointed municipality (or other aggregation unit) is shown. The data underlying the migration maps originate from the first name selection from the Civil Registration, acquired by Utrecht University and the Meertens Institute in 2006. These concern 16 million records from persons with Dutch citizenship, alive in 2006, and in addition 6 million persons deceased before 2006, but mentioned in other records – mainly as parents. The records include identifiers by which family relations can be reconstructed. After considerable efforts in data clearing and reconstruction of older generations, the data provide an almost complete overview of the Dutch population, born after 1930, and a fairly good sample from the period 1880-1930 (>25%). The user will be given options to choose generation (places of birth of the current population, their parents, grandparents grand-grandparents, or starting with the persons born between 1880-1900: the current places of residence of their children, grandchildren), and gender. Each map will be made available as a .csv record with municipality number and percentage as fields, and thus can be used by users in correlation studies with other variables. Utrecht University and the Meertens Institute have the signed permission of the "Basisadministratie voor Persoonsgegevens en Reisdocumenten, The Hague" to use the data for scientific purposes. The migration maps present the data in an aggregated way, and do not violate privacy requirements (no individual can possibly be identified from the maps). However, the underlying data containing information about individual persons and their family relations cannot be made available for reasons of privacy.

Description

Gabmap is a free web-based application for dialectometry. It measures the differences in sets of phonetic (or phonemic) transcriptions via edit distance. Gabmap has a graphical user interface that makes string comparison facility available as a web application. This enables wider experimentation with the techniques. Gabmap (a.k.a. ADEPT) measures pronunciation distances based on transcriptions and aligns pronunciation transcription data. Because the measurements are numeric, they can be aggregated in order to obtain an estimation of overall pronunciation differences among varieties. The software uses a range of edit distance (or Levenshtein) algorithms. It is useful for dialectologists, and has been used extensively in dialectology. It has occasionally been used for other purposes, e.g. trying to identify loan words automatically (Paris, Musée de l’Homme, central Asian project involving Turkic and also Indo-Iranian languages). The software has also been used as the basis of a program to multi-align pronunciation data for the purpose of phylogenetic analysis. The Gabmap developers claim that the program could also be used to measure deviant pronunciation e.g. of second-language learners, or of speakers with speech defects. A variety of related algorithms are implemented in the package of C programs (and R programs) the developers turned into a web application, including a basic version regarding segments only as same or different, and other versions variously respecting consonant/vowel distinctions; using phonetic segment distances as provided via an assignment of phonetic or phonological features to segments; using segment distances as learned from refining alignment correspondences; and applying weightings derived from (inverse) frequency (derived from Goebl’s work) or depending on the position within a word. There are useful auxiliary programs aimed at assisting users in converting phonetic data to X-SAMPA and at spotting errors. (In working with users in the past, the developers have noted that data conversion is a major hurdle.) There are additional meta-analytical calculations aimed at gauging how reliable the signal is from a given set of data, and aimed at comparing various options with respect to the degree to which they capture the geographic cohesion one assumes in dialectology. Gabmap was developed in the CLARIN-NL project ADEPT: Assaying Differences via Edit-Distance of Pronunciation Transcriptions.

Title

Cornetto: Combinatorial and Relational Network as Toolkit for Dutch Language Technology

Description

Cornetto is a lexical resource for the Dutch language which combines two resources with different semantic organisations: the Dutch Wordnet with its synset organisation and the Dutch Reference Lexicon which includes definitions, usage constraints, selectional restrictions, syntactic behaviours, illustrative contexts, etc. The Cornetto database contains over 92K lemmas and almost 120K word meanings. The Cornetto lexical resource for Dutch covers the most generic and central part of the language. Cornetto combines the structures of the Princeton Wordnet, some of the features from the FrameNet for English and the information on morphological, syntactic, semantic and combinatorial features of lexemes normally found in dictionaries. The Cornetto resource is compiled by combining and aligning two existing semantic resources for Dutch: the Dutch wordnet (DWN) and the Referentie Bestand Nederlands (RBN). Recently, the resource is revised and extended with sentiment values in the From Text to Political Positions project , and with semantic annotations in SONAR, CGN and texts from the Web in the DutchSemCor project. The Cornetto Lexical Resource consists of two large repositories of lexicon data: the lexical entry repository and the synset repository. A Lexical Entry (LE) is a word-meaning pair (i.e. a single meaning of a certain word form), for which morphological, syntactical, semantical and combinatorial information is given. As such, LEs are word senses in the lexical semantic tradition, containing the linguistic knowledge that is needed to properly use the word in a specific meaning in a language. Since the LEs follow a word-to-meaning view, the semantical and combinatorial information for each meaning clarify the differences across the meanings. LEs focus on the polysemy of words and typically follow an approach to represent condensed and generalised meanings from which more specific ones can be derived. Each LE is aligned with a synset (set of synonyms) in the synset repository. As such, a synset can be seen as a set of LEs with the same meaning and every synset stands for a concept. The synsets in Cornetto are interconnected by different semantic relations such as hyponymy, antonymy and meronymy. The Cornet-to Resource is aligned with the English Wordnet, from which domain information was imported. The domains represent clusters of concepts that are related by a shared area of interest, such as sport, education or politics. The definitions of LEs from the same synset should be semantically equivalent and the LEs of a single word form should belong to different synsets. The LEs of a single word form typically differ in terms of connotation, pragmatics, syntax and semantics but synonymous words in the same synset can be differen-tiated along connotation, pragmatics and syntax but not semantics. This structure of the resource makes it possible to combine the very detailed information on form and usage of a specific LE or a group of LEs with the semantic relations which are specified in the corresponding synset(s). COAVA: Cognition, Acquisition and Variation Tool

Description

In COAVA two sets of databases are made available in a standardized way: one with historical dialect data (the databases WBD and WLD with lexical data of the Brabantish and Limburgian dialect between 1880-1980) and one with first language acquisition data (four databases form the CHILDES project). The databases contain linguistic information (dialect form, standardised form (“Dutchified”), lexical meaning), geographical information (locality, dialect area, province) and information on the source (inquiry forms or monotopic dictionaries and the date of documentation). The visualisation of the first two sets of information will lead to lexical maps. The most typical way for the user to get to the data will be with the use of the browsable concept taxonomy. The databases are, in other words, approachable via search tools but also via a thematic taxonomy. This taxonomy was developed for the dialect databases and covers the general vocabulary. COAVA (COgnition, Acquisition and VAriation Tool) brings together two strange bedfellows: first language acquisition and historical dialectology. In historical linguistics there is the common assumption that language change in the past is due to the process of non-target like transmission of linguistic features between generations i.e. between parents and children. Despite this assumption, both disciplines remain isolated from each other due to, among others, different methods of data-collection and different types of resources with empirical data. The aim of the COAVA project was to demonstrate that the common assumption in historical linguistics, mentioned above, can be examined in detail with the help of Digital Humanities. This interdisciplinary research targets at the development of a tool for easily exploring the linguistic characteristics of concepts. In COAVA two sets of databases are made available in a standardized way: one with historical dialect data (the databases WBD and WLD with lexical data of the Brabantish and Limburgian dialect between 1880-1980) and one with first language acquisition data (four databases form the CHILDES project).

AVResearcherXL: Exploring audiovisual metadata in historical context

Description

AVResearcherXL is a tool for exploring radio and television programme descriptions, television subtitles and general newspaper articles. The interface searches across the catalogue "iMMix" of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and a selection of newspapers of KB Royal Archive of the Netherlands. By the end of 2014, the data used by AVResearcherXL are: iMMix 932,035 broadcasts indexed 18,124 broadcasts with subtitles 1 January 1900 is the date of the first broadcast in the index 26 October 2013 is the date of the last broadcast in the index KB newspapers 25,811,413 articles indexed 16,294,029 articles are of type "artikel" 8,483,542 articles are of type "advertentie" 630,929 articles are of type "illustratie met onderschrift" 402,913 articles are of type "familiebericht" 1 January 1900 is the date of the first article in the index 30 November 1994 is the date of the last article in the index AVResearcherXL is financially supported by CLARIN-NL within the QuaMeRDES-project and by CLARIAH-SEED within the Research Instruments for Media Studies-project. AVResearcherXL is an extended version of MeRDES, the tool developed in 2012 by the NWO-CATCH project BRIDGE. MeRDES was further developed into AVResearcher by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in 2013. AVResearcherXL is a collaborative project of Centre for Television in Transition (Utrecht University), Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam) and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. The partners worked together with Dispectu for the development of the interface and back-end, and with Frontwise for the styling of the interface.
