The system here allows you to convert your book pages' images into editable text, presented in a particular text format called XML (eXtended Markup Language) of a particular type called Text-Encoding Initiative or TEI XML. This particular format was developed specifically for being able to mark-up or annotate the text you want to work on, i.e. to add all manner of further information to the actual text, e.g. to build a critical edition of it, which is most likely exactly what you want to do with your author's work.

Title

PICCL: Philosophical Integrator of Computational and Corpus Libraries

Description

PICCL is a set of workflows for corpus building through OCR, post-correction, modernization of historic language and Natural Language Processing. It combines Tesseract Optical Character Recognition, TICCL functionality and Frog functionality in a single pipeline. Tesseract offers Open Source software for optical character recognition. TICCL (Text Induced Corpus Clean-up) is a system that is designed to search a corpus for all existing variants of (potentially) all words occurring in the corpus. This corpus can be one text, or several, in one or more directories, located on one or more machines. TICCL creates word frequency lists, listing for each word type how often the word occurs in the corpus. These frequencies of the normalized word forms are the sum of the frequencies of the actual word forms found in the corpus. TICCL is a system that is intended to detect and correct typographical errors (misprints) and OCR errors (optical character recognition) in texts. When books or other texts are scanned from paper by a machine, that then turns these scans, i.e. images, into digital text files, errors occur. For instance, the letter combination `in' can be read as `m', and so the word `regeering' is incorrectly reproduced as `regeermg'. TICCL can be used to detect these errors and to suggest a correct form. Frog enriches textual documents with various linguistic annotations.

Title

WIP: War in Parliament

Description

An advanced search engine for the OCR-ed scanned image collection of proceedings of the Dutch Hansard (Handelingen der Staten-Generaal 1930-1995). These proceedings are available as a fully annotated semi-structures dataset for historical and social science research. The output of the search engine can be restricted by speaker name, party, date range, and other criteria. References to the Second World War (WW II) have shaped political debate in the Netherlands for many decades. However, we have no systematic knowledge of why, how often, when, by whom or from which political party, and in which context, these references were made. Nor do we know the meanings politicians ascribed to the war years, the lessons the war was supposed to teach, and how all of this influenced political decision-making. WIP helps answering these questions and will help us better understand the complex legacies of WW II. The WIP project bridges the gap between historical and social science practices and the possibilities offered by using large corpora and language resources, in particular Clarin tools for Dutch. The dataset - de Handelingen der Staten-Generaal (Dutch Hansard) - are made compliant with Clarin, ISOCAT and ISO/TC 37/SC 4 standards. The search engine for this dataset uses an intuitive and powerful query language based on XPath, and its output can be fed directly into further analysis programs like SPSS. Integrating this technology with important historical research questions will directly contribute to new and innovative ways of writing about history. The search engine results can be exported in a CSV-format (comma seperated values). This makes it easy to calculate statistics offline from a result set and apply further filters.

Title

WAHSP/BILAND: web application for (bilingual) historical sentiment mining in public media

Description

WAHSP/BILAND is a research tool for historians that uses textual data of news media from the period 1863-1940 of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin as input material. One can search with single query terms or with combinations thereof. Apart from showing the articles that match the query, the results can be visualized by word clouds of single articles together with sentiment words highlighted, or by a word cloud of the whole result set together with newspaper statistics derived from their metadata. WAHSP/BILAND enables historians to collect and process large bi-lingual (Dutch and German) sets of opinionated text-data from news media and extract discourse identity and intensity patterns in two different countries with different scripts (e.g. Latin and Gothic). This tool offers a unique opportunity for non-technical humanities researchers to perform a new kind of historical e-research for studying changing opinions, notions and perceptions regarding public health and policy issues. The text mining tools for opinion/sentiment extraction that form the technological base for WAHSP/BILAND have been developed within the NTU/STEVIN DuOMAn project. The technology includes algorithms and tools for identification of polarity (positive/support or negative/criticism), sources (opinion-holders), frequency of items and specific targets of discourses. The tools and subjectivity lexicons are implemented as modules of ‘Fietstas’ 2, an web service for text analysis. Fietstas also provides other essential text processing modules (morphological normalization, format and encoding reconciliation, named entity recognition and normalization, etc.) and visualization modules (interactive word clouds and timelines). Fietstas has been developed and is being used for processing of large-scale datasets in the context of several projects, such as DuOMAn. A text translation service based on Machine Learning can be used to translate existing lexicons and documents between Dutch and German (both directions). The web application uses this functionality of Fietstas to leverage interactive creation, expansion and refinement of lexicons specific to the user’s research questions and needs. For BILAND new bilingual and biscriptural lexicons have been developed. The application uses the visualization features of Fietstas to allow users to examine the research domain along the dimensions of time, context, and the identity and frequency of the discourse. WAHSP/BILAND is meant to be generic and testable in all domains, where analysis of topics, contexts and attitudes in large volumes of text is needed.

VK: Verrijkt Koninkrijk (Enriched Kingdom)

Description

Dr Loe de Jong’s Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog remains the most appealing history of German occupied Dutch society (1940-1945). Published between 1969 and 1991, the 14 volumes, consisting of 30 parts and 18,000 pages combine the qualities of an authoritative work for a general audience, and an inevitable point of reference for scholars. In VK this corpus is enriched with: - Tokenization, sentence splitting, part-of-speech tagging and lemmatization (done with the FROG software from Tilburg University); - Named entity recognition (done using UvA's NE tagger (specially trained for Dutch within the Stevin DuoMan project)); - Polarity tagging (positive/negative connotation of words) (done using UvA's FietsTas software (developed for Dutch within the Stevin DuoMan project)); - Named entity reconciliation by linking to Wikipedia (done using software developed by Edgar Meij (UvA)).

Title

TTNWW - TST Tools for the Dutch Language as Web services in a Workflow

Description

TTNWW integrates and makes available existing Language Technology (LT) software components for the Dutch language that have been developed in the STEVIN and CGN projects. The LT components (for text and speech) are made available as web-services in a simplified workflow system that enables researchers without much technical background to use standard LT workflow recipes. The web services are available in two separate domains: "Text" and "Speech" processing. For "Text", workflows for the following functionality is offered by TTNWW: - Orthographic Normalisation using TICCLops (version CLARIN-NL 1.0); - Part of Speech Tagging, Lemmatisation, Chunking, limited Multiword Unit Recognition, and Grammatical Relation Assignment by Frog (Version 012.012); - Syntactic Parsing (including grammatical relation assignment, limited named entity recognition, and limited multiword unit recognition) by the Alpino Parser (version 1.3); - Semantic Annotation; - Named Entity Recognition; - Co-reference Assignment. For "Speech", the following workflows are offered: - Automatic Transcription of speech files using a Netherlands Dutch acoustic model; - Automatic Transcription of speech files using a Flemish Dutch acoustic model; - Conversion of the input speech file to the required sampling rate, followed by automatic transcription. The TTNWW services have been created in a Dutch and Flemish collaboration project building on the results of past Dutch and Flemish projects. The web services are partly deployed in the SURF-SARA BiG-Grid cloud or at CLARIN centres in the Netherlands and at CLARIN VL University partners. The architecture of the TTNWW portal consists out of several components and follows the principles of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). The TTNWW GUI front-end is a Flex module that communicates with the TTNWW web-application which keeps track of the different sessions and knows which LT recipes are available. TTNWW communicates assigments (workflow specifications) to the WorkflowService that evaluates the requested workflow and requests the DeploymentSevice to start the required LT web-services. After initialization of the LT web-services, the workflow specification is sent to the Taverna Server, that takes further care of the workflow. To facilitate the process of wrapping applications that were originally designed as standalone applications into web services, the CLAM (Computational Linguistics Application Mediator) wrapper software allows for easy and transparent transformation of applications into RESTful web services. The CLAM software has extensively been used in the TTNWW project for both text and speech processing tools. With the exception of Alpino and MBSRL all web services work operate on CLAM wrappers. Given the number of web services involved in the TTNWW project and possibilities offered by the cloud environment the preferred method of delivering the web service installations was delivery of complete virtual machine images by the LT providers. These could be directly uploaded into the cloud environment and thus relieving the CLARIN centres nd LT providers from the original foreseen task of running the webservices themselves. A potential advantage of this method, that has not been exploited in the project yet, is that these images may be also be delivered directly to the end user so these can be run in a local configuration using virtualization software such as VMWare of VirtualBox. The workflow engine used in the project was Taverna. But build on top of this was a a number of selectable task recipes, following a task oriented approach in line with the premises that users with no or little technical expertise should be able to use the system. In this context, tasks are understood in terms of end results of processes such as semantic role labelling, pos tagging or syntactic analysis and ready-made workflows are constructed that can be readily used by the end user.

Description

Texcavator enables a researcher to use full-text search on the newspaper archive of the Dutch Royal Library. On top of that, it allows for visualizations like word clouds, time lines and heat maps. It also provides services to enhance your search experience like filtering, stopword removal, normalization and stemming. Texcavator also gives access to ShiCo (Shifting Concepts), developed by Carlos Martinez Ortiz (NL eScience Center).ShiCo is a tool for visualizing time shifting concepts. We refer to a concept as the set of words which are related to a given seed word. ShiCo uses a set of semantic models (word2vec) spanning a number of years to explore how concepts change over time -- words related to a given concept at time t=0 may differ from the words related to the same concept at time t=n . Texcavator originated from the earlier text mining applications WAHSP and BiLand. During the Translantis project, the application was renamed to Texcavator and further developed by the UvA (Fons Laan). In May 2014, development was taken over by the Netherlands eScience Center (Janneke van der Zwaan). From April 2015 onwards, Texcavator was developed at the Digital Humanities lab of Utrecht University (Julian Gonggrijp and Martijn van der Klis). ShiCo was created in cooperation with the NL eScience Center (Carlos Martinez Ortiz).

RemBench - a Digital Workbench for Rembrandt Research

RemBench enables one to search and browse for works of art, artists, primary sources and library sources related to Rembrandt, using faceted search by location, author/artist name, author/artist type, and date range, and/or by both exact and fuzzy keyword search. It offers both a web application and a RESTful web service. RemBench combines the content of four different databases behind one search interface: RKDartists and RKDimages, two databases maintained by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD); RemDoc, a collection of original documents related to Rembrandt van Rijn from the period between 1475 to circa 1750; RUQuest, a library system that provides access to full text articles, as well as the complete collection of (e-)books and journals from the Radboud University Library Catalogue. RemBench does not influence the content of these databases.

Title

Polimedia: Interlinking multimedia for the analysis of media coverage of political debates

Description

PoliMedia links the minutes of the debates in the Dutch Parliament (Dutch Hansard) to the databases of historical newspapers and ANP radio bulletins to allow cross-media analysis of coverage in a uniform search interface. For each fragment from a single speaker in a debate, the developers extracted relevant information: the speaker, the date, important terms from its content and important terms from the description of the complete debate. This information was then combined to create a query with which they searched the archives of newspapers, radio bulletins and television programmes. Media items that corresponded to this query were retrieved and a link was created between the speech and the media item, creating a Semantic Web of Dutch Hansard and media coverage. This Semantic Web contains links from the Dutch Hansard to newspaper articles and radio bulletins. From evaluations it was found that there was a 62% recall and 75% precision. To navigate this Semantic Web, a search user interface was developed based on a requirements study with five scholars in history and political communication. The developers created a faceted search interface in which the Dutch parliamentary minutes can be searched in full-text and in which refinements can be performed based on the speaker, the role of the speaker (parliament of government), political party and year. These debates are presented with links to the original locations of the media items. Polimedia is a collaboration of the TU Delft and the Free University (development of Semantic Web of Dutch Hansard and media), the Netherlands Institute of Sound and Vision (development of the search user interface) and Erasmus University Rotterdam (projectleader and user research of historians and political communication researchers).
