The dictionary of the Brabantic dialects, part II (General Vocabulary), abbreviated as WBD, is a semasiologically oriented dictionary. It consists of 14 subcollections, each covering a certain topic. The topics covered are:

FESLI: Functional elements in Specific Language Impairment

Summary

A corpus with data from monolingual and bilingual children (Dutch - Turkish) with and without Specific Language Impairment (SLI).

Background

The FESLI-data come from two NWO-sponsored projects: BiSLI and Variflex. The numbers of children included in the resources are:

12 bilingual children without language impairment (SLI)
25 monolingual children with SLI
20 bilingual children with SLI

The children´s ages ranged from 6;0 to 8:5. For more precise information about the specific age distribution in each group, the reader is referred the dissertation written by Antje Orgassa (http://dare.uva.nl/document/147433). The non-impaired children were included in the Variflex project (data collected by Elma Blom) and also used in the BiSLI project; the data from the children with SLI were exclusive to the biSLI project.

D-LUCEA: Database of the Longitudinal Utrecht Collection of English Accents

Summary

The LUCEA database is a database of existing speech recordings of L1 and L2 speakers of English. The recorded speakers are students from an international student community where English is used as lingua franca. These students are being recorded longitudinally throughout their 3-year period on campus, using read and spontaneous speech in L1 and in L2 English (or in L1 English only). The database is of interest for research and development in linguistics, language education (pronunciation training), speech technology (foreign accent detection, language recognition, speech recognition), and sociophonetics.

Background

The LUCEA Database consists of speech recordings of students at the University College Utrecht (UCU), the international honours college of Utrecht University, the Netherlands. At UCU, English is the language of instruction and also the social lingua franca. So far, 72 (cohort 2010) and about 70 (cohort 2011) students have been recruited, as well as 17 exchange students who are native speakers of English. All speaker groups are about 70% female and 30% male. For the 2010 students, 3 recordings are available. For the 2011 students and for the exchange students, 1 recording is available.

Each recording consists of approx 20 minutes of speech, half of which is read (English read texts and sentences, and L1 read text for 2011 cohort) and half of which is spontaneous (2 minutes English monologue on informal topic, 2m monologue in L1 on informal topic, 2m English monologue on formal topic, 3m English conversation with interviewer). Each recording is made using a strict protocol describing the exact location of microphones, speakers’ instructions, recording procedure, etc.
The speech recordings are not yet annotated nor transcribed. The transcripts of the read texts are available in PDF. The metadata scheme developed in this project allows future additions of annotations.

The recordings are part of the larger and ongoing LUCEA project in which the recruited students are being followed throughout their 3-year period on the UCU campus. This will result in about 900 recording sessions. At present, about 280 [(72+65+55) + (~70) + (17)] recordings are available.

VALID - vulnerability in language acquisition: language impairments in Dutch

Summary

An open access multimedia archive of language pathology data collected in the Netherlands, primarily on Dutch, audio files and transcripts. Currently, this corpus contains 5 different data sets. In the VALID data archive old, current and future data can be brought together.

Background

VALID, an open access multimedia language data archive, facilitates and promotes innovative research in the area of language impairment. There are a number of compelling reasons for exchanging and sharing this kind of data. Obviously, in a small country like the Netherlands a considerably smaller amount of language data is being collected than in much larger regions, especially so with respect to language disorders, a highly specific research domain. The combination of a wide range of language impairments in one data archive not only enhances the study of similar impairments but also advances comparisons between different disorders. Moreover, the inclusion of different age groups allows for quasi-longitudinal research designs. Finally, analysis of task properties and effects that are specific to pathological language groups can make a significant contribution to evidence-based research.

The following data sets define the launching platform for the VALID data archive, together with the BISLI data set that is currently being curated (FESLI):

The SLI RU-Kentalis database: the expression of spatial relations by children with SLI and normally developing children in their spoken language production
The UU SLI-Dyslexia project database: early language development in children at familial risk of dyslexia
The bilingual deaf children RU-Kentalis database: the bilingual language and communication development of young deaf children in Sign Language of the Netherlands (SLN) and Dutch (D)
The ADHD and SLI corpus UvA database: the language and executive functioning profiles of children with ADHD and children with SLI and TD children
The deaf adults RU database: the acquisition of morphosyntactic aspects of Dutch by deaf Dutch adults (late L1/early L2) and hearing Turkish and Moroccan-Arabic L2-learners of Dutch (late L2).

For all data sets concerned, written informed consent from the participants or their caretakers has been obtained. DBD - Dutch Bilingualism Database, TCULT - Talen en Culturen in Utrechtse Lombok en Transvaal

Summary

The CLARIN NL supported data sets are part of an already existing collection: Dutch Bilingualism Database housed at the MPI for Psycholinguistics that are both also CLARIN compatible. The addtional DBD / TCULT data were curated by the CLARIN DCS (http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1963) and delivered in February 2014.

Background

The original DBD data was collected, curated and digitised in a project led by Pieter Muysken from 2003-2008 and stored at the MPI for Psycholinguistics. The DBD is a rather substantial collection of data (over 1,500 sessions) from a number of projects and research programmes that were directed at investigating multilingualism and comprises data originating from Dutch, Sranan, Sarnami, Papiamentu, Arabic, Berber and 1Turkish speakers . At the basis of the collection is the research project TCULT[1] (1998-2002) in which intercultural language contacts in the Dutch city of Utrecht were studied. DBD established a first curation of the TCULT data and added many more bilingual data sets collected in the period 1985 – 2005.

LESLLA - Low-educated/Illiterate Second Language Learners

Background

The LESLLA corpus dates from 2003-2005 and contains speech of 15 low educated learners of Dutch as a second language. The learners are all women. Eight learners have a Turkish background, seven learners have a Moroccan background. From these learners, data were collected over time in three cycles, with an interval of 5 months. In each cycle the participants took part in three types of tasks: (1) production tasks, (2) perception tasks, and (3) a perception task with a metalinguistic component. The production tasks included open elicitation (14,000 utterances), closed completion (4,000 utterances) and imitation (6,000 utterances). Apart from the audio files, the data consist of orthographic transcriptions. For all 15 learners there are also metadata available.

The Language Archive, hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI), is one of the leading centres worldwide for archiving multimedia/multimodal language resources covering many linguistic data types such as multimedia annotations, multimedia lexica, grammar descriptions etc. (http://corpus1.mpi.nl). It also is creating the Language Archiving Technology (http://www.mpi.nl/lat ), which is used worldwide to create, manage and access very large amounts of language resources (> 60 terabytes). In addition, the institute has been involved in several infrastructure and standardization projects at European and international level for several years. CLARIN-NL benefits in particular in the areas of data offering, standardization, technology and infrastructure building from the experience gained within CLARIN-EU by the technical department of the institute. In particular, the MPI offers to the CLARIN-NL community:

a depositing and curation service in its long-term archive for linguistic resources, access to a wide variety of standalone tools, web applications and web services,
software services and development efforts in the field of ISOcat, RelCat, SchemaCat, Component based metadata infrastructure, the Virtual Language Observatory, Federated search, development and offering of new data analysis and visualization technology.

MPI participated and particpates in several national and international research infrastructure projects, such as CLARIN, DASISH and EUDAT.

The MPI was an important inspirator of the CLARIN initiative. Currently it led the CLARIN NL IIP infrastructure project and participated in several smaller Clarin projects. Current and previous staff members were active in CLARIN organizations; Daan Broeder is a member of the CLARIN-NL EB (CTO) Dieter van Uytvanck is a member of the CLARIN ERIC board of directors (CTO).

COAVA: Cognition, Acquisition and Variation Tool

Summary

In COAVA two sets of databases are made available in a standardized way: one with historical dialect data (the databases WBD and WLD with lexical data of the Brabantish and Limburgian dialect between 1880-1980) and one with first language acquisition data (four databases form the CHILDES project). The databases contain linguistic information (dialect form, standardised form (“Dutchified”), lexical meaning), geographical information (locality, dialect area, province) and information on the source (inquiry forms or monotopic dictionaries and the date of documentation). The visualisation of the first two sets of information will lead to lexical maps. The most typical way for the user to get to the data will be with the use of the browsable concept taxonomy. The databases are, in other words, approachable via search tools but also via a thematic taxonomy. This taxonomy was developed for the dialect databases and covers the general vocabulary.

Background

COAVA (COgnition, Acquisition and VAriation Tool) brings together two strange bedfellows: first language acquisition and historical dialectology. In historical linguistics there is the common assumption that language change in the past is due to the process of non-target like transmission of linguistic features between generations i.e. between parents and children. Despite this assumption, both disciplines remain isolated from each other due to, among others, different methods of data-collection and different types of resources with empirical data. The aim of the COAVA project was to demonstrate that the common assumption in historical linguistics, mentioned above, can be examined in detail with the help of Digital Humanities. This interdisciplinary research targets at the development of a tool for easily exploring the linguistic characteristics of concepts. In COAVA two sets of databases are made available in a standardized way: one with historical dialect data (the databases WBD and WLD with lexical data of the Brabantish and Limburgian dialect between 1880-1980) and one with first language acquisition data (four databases form the CHILDES project).
