Description

Texcavator enables a researcher to use full-text search on the newspaper archive of the Dutch Royal Library. On top of that, it allows for visualizations like word clouds, time lines and heat maps. It also provides services to enhance your search experience like filtering, stopword removal, normalization and stemming. Texcavator also gives access to ShiCo (Shifting Concepts), developed by Carlos Martinez Ortiz (NL eScience Center).ShiCo is a tool for visualizing time shifting concepts. We refer to a concept as the set of words which are related to a given seed word. ShiCo uses a set of semantic models (word2vec) spanning a number of years to explore how concepts change over time -- words related to a given concept at time t=0 may differ from the words related to the same concept at time t=n . Texcavator originated from the earlier text mining applications WAHSP and BiLand. During the Translantis project, the application was renamed to Texcavator and further developed by the UvA (Fons Laan). In May 2014, development was taken over by the Netherlands eScience Center (Janneke van der Zwaan). From April 2015 onwards, Texcavator was developed at the Digital Humanities lab of Utrecht University (Julian Gonggrijp and Martijn van der Klis). ShiCo was created in cooperation with the NL eScience Center (Carlos Martinez Ortiz).

RemBench - a Digital Workbench for Rembrandt Research

Description

RemBench enables one to search and browse for works of art, artists, primary sources and library sources related to Rembrandt, using faceted search by location, author/artist name, author/artist type, and date range, and/or by both exact and fuzzy keyword search. It offers both a web application and a RESTful web service. RemBench combines the content of four different databases behind one search interface: RKDartists and RKDimages, two databases maintained by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD); RemDoc, a collection of original documents related to Rembrandt van Rijn from the period between 1475 to circa 1750; RUQuest, a library system that provides access to full text articles, as well as the complete collection of (e-)books and journals from the Radboud University Library Catalogue. RemBench does not influence the content of these databases.

PILNAR: Pilgrimage Narratives - a corpus for studying the profile of the modern pilgrim

Description

A corpus of pilgrimage narratives with Dutch texts written after ca. 2000 that present the thoughts and impressions of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. The PILNAR corpus is a source for research for a variety of (sub)disciplines: culture studies, ritual and religious studies, but also media and e-culture studies (cf the use of blogs and other social media for the self-presentation of experiences). Only for authorized users. The PILNAR corpus contains six subcorpora: - Volumes of De Jacobsstaf 1986-: 84 pdf files; - Volumes of De Pelgrim of the Flemish Society of Santiago de Compostella nos. 1-4 (16mb, 10mb, 16mb) (both societies work collaborate closely); - Volumes of Ultreia, a newsletter; 3 issues available now: January, February, April 2011; - Pilgrimage accounts and blogs by pilgrims available via the Societies Netherlands: circa 140 files; Flemish: circa 138 files; - A corpus of pilgrimage narratives compiled on the occasion of the exhibition in Museum Catharijneconvent held in collaboration with the Society: www.pelgrimsverhalen.nl; (link is external) already on the site now: about 180 fields (as of July 2011); - Accounts and narratives that come in after a specially targeted notice via the site and periodical by the Society (De Jacobsstaf), with perhaps a Flemish companion piece (De Pelgrim).

Metadata Editor, Browser and Organiser for IMDI and CMDI

Description

Arbil (Archive Builder) is a metadata editor, browser and organiser for metadata in IMDI and CMDI format. It is a Java desktop application that runs on most operating systems. Arbil can be used to create new metadata from scratch for resources on your local machine, or it can be used to download and modify metadata that are already in an archive. Arbil is a generic CMDI editor and therefore supports all CMDI profiles. It has a built-in file type verification tool that is configured to check files against the list of accepted file types for The Language Arhive, this can however be overruled for other archives.

The tools are available as a Java command line tool, a web service and a web application.The OpenConvert Tools were created by IVDNT in the OpenConvert project. Title

ELAN Multimedia Annotator

Description

ELAN is a professional tool for the creation of complex annotations on video and audio resources. With ELAN a user can add an unlimited number of annotations to audio and/or video streams. An annotation can be a sentence, word or gloss, a comment, translation or a description of any feature observed in the media. Annotations can be created on multiple layers, called tiers. Tiers can be hierarchically interconnected. An annotation can either be time-aligned to the media or it can refer to other existing annotations. The textual content of annotations is always in Unicode and the transcription is stored in an XML format. ELAN provides several different views on the annotations, each view is connected and synchronized to the media playhead. Up to 4 video files can be associated with an annotation document. Each video can be integrated in the main document window or displayed in its own resizable window. ELAN delegates media playback to an existing media framework, like Windows Media Player, QuickTime or JMF (Java Media Framework). As a result a wide variety of audio and video formats is supported and high performance media playback can be achieved. ELAN is written in the Java programming language and the sources are available for non-commercial use. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. ELAN has been functionally extended with the help of the following CLARIN-NL-funded projects: - ColTime: Collaboration on Time-Based Resources. - EXILSEA: Exploiting ISOcat's Language Sections in ELAN and ANNEX. - MultiCon: Multilayer Concordance Functions in ELAN and ANNEX. - SignLinC: Linking lexical databases and annotated corpora of signed languages. Over the years, many funders have contributed to the development of ELAN in several projects, such as the Volkswagen Foundation, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Max Planck Society and the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language.

Title

DSS: Dutch Ships and Sailors

Description

A tool chain and methodology for converting legacy datasets in the area of maritime history. Set up to facilitate over 25 data sets, the initial population consists of 4 selected maritime-historical datasets. The maritime industry has been central to regional and global economic, social and cultural exchange. It is also one of the best historically documented sectors of human activity. Many aspects of it have been recorded by shipping companies, governments, newspapers and other institutions. In the past few decades, much of the data in the preserved historical source material has been digitized. Among the most interesting data are those on shipping movement and crew members. The Dutch Republic in the 17th and 18th centuries had to rely to a large extent on immigration to man its fleet. Especially in Asian waters, it also relied on Asian crews. Often information that deals with the same shipping movements and crew composition is spread over several historical sources and hence over several databases. The data often refers to the same ‘places’, ‘ships’, ‘persons’ and ‘events’. By linking the different available databases, the data complements and amplifies each other, and new research possibilities open up. Ideally, we would want to follow a ship from port to port, and crew members pursuing their careers from ship to ship. The Dutch Ships and Sailors project provides a tool chain and methodology for converting legacy datasets. The infrastructure includes common vocabularies to normalize and enrich existing data. Links are established between the datasets and to other relevant datasets. In doing so, Dutch Ships and Sailors builds a (semantic) web-based structure that aims to function as a future platform and infrastructure for maritime historical datasets. Initially, this portal contains the following datasets: - Historische Kranten of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek; - The Monsterrollen databases contains elaborate data on the crew composition of ships from the Northern Netherlands (c. 1800-1930) and provides information on the sailors involved, such as the places of origin, wage and age; - The databases VOC Opvarenden, providing extensive data on crews of VOC ships leaving the Republic; - The database Dutch-Asiatic Shipping, providing data on all inter-continental voyages of VOC ships; - The database Generale Zeemonsterrollen, providing data on the crew composition and sometimes location of VOC ships stationed in Asia and not engaged in inter-continental shipping.

CMDI to RDF conversion

Description

There is growing amount of on-line information available in RDF format as Linked Open Data (LOD) and a strong community very actively promotes its use. The publication of information as LOD is also considered an important signal that the publisher is actively searching for information sharing with a world full of new potential users. Added advantages of LOD, when well used, are the explicit semantics and high interoperability. But the problematic modelling by non-expert users offsets these advantages, which is a reason why modelling systems as CMDI are used. The CMDI2RDF project aims to bring the LOD advantages to the CMDI world and make the huge store of CMDI information available to new groups of users and at the same time offer CLARIN a powerful tool to experiment with new metadata discovery possibilities. The CMD2RDFservice was created to allow connection with the growing LOD world, and facilitate experiments within CLARIN merging CMDI with other, RDF based, information sources. One of the promises of LOD is the ease to link data sets together and answer queries based on this ‘cloud’ of LOD datasets. Thus in the enrichment and use cases part of the project we looked at other datasets to link to the CLARIN joint metadata domain. We used the WALS N3 RDF dump for one of the use cases. Although it is in the end relatively easy to go from a specific typological feature to the CMD records via a shared URI, it still showcased a weakness of the Linked Data approach. One has to carefully inspect the property paths involved. And in this case the path was broken as there was no clear way to go from the WALS feature data to the WALS language info except for extracting the WALS language code from the feature URI pattern and insert it the language URI pattern. This showcases that although the big LOD cloud shows potential for knowledge discovery by crossing dataset boundaries, design decisions in the individual datasets can still hamper algorithms and manual inspection is needed. The CMD2RDF service was developed at the TLA/MPI for Psycholinguistics and DANS and later moved to Meertens Institute where the expertise remains.

Description

The CLARIN Vocabulary Service is a running instance of the OpenSKOS exchange and publication platform for SKOS vocabularies. OpenSKOS offers several ways to publish SKOS vocabularies (upload SKOS file, harvest from another OpenSKOS instance with OAI-PMH, construct using the RESTful API) and to use vocabularies (search and autocomplete using the API, harvest using OAI-PMH, inspect in the interactive Editor or consult as Linked Data). This CLARIN OpenSKOS instance is hosted by the Meertens Institute. Contents This OpenSKOS instance currently publishes SKOS versions of three vocabularies: - ISO-639-3 language codes, as published by SIL. - Closed and simple Data Categories from the ISOcat metadata profile. - A manually constructed and curated list of Organizations, based on the CLARIN VLO. .

CLARIN Concept Registry

Description

The CCR is a concept registry according to the W3C SKOS recommendation. It was chosen by CLARIN to serve as a semantic registry to overcome semantic interoperability issues with CMDI metadata and different annotation tag sets used for linguistic annotation. The CCR is part of the CMDI metadata infrastructure. The W3C SKOS recommendation, and the OpenSKOS implementation thereof, provides the means for ‘data-sharing, bridging several different fields of knowledge, technology and practice’. According to this model, each concept is assigned a unique administrative identifier, together with information on the status or decision-making process associated with the concept. In addition, concept specifications in the CCR contain linguistic descriptions, such as definitions and examples, and can be associated with a variety of labels. .
