MIMORE

Summary

The MIMORE tool enables researchers to investigate morphosyntactic variation in the Dutch dialects by searching three related databases with a common on-line search engine. The three databases involved are also available as XML: DynaSAND (the dynamic syntactic atlas of the Dutch dialects), DiDDD (Diversity in Dutch DP Design) and GTRP (Goeman, Taeldeman, van Reenen Project).

Background

The data in DynaSAND, the dynamic syntactic atlas of the Dutch dialects (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/sand/ (link is external)), were collected between 2000 and 2005 by oral interviews (fieldwork and telephone) in about 300 locations across The Netherlands, Belgium and a small part of north-west France. Dialect speakers were asked to judge and/or translate some 150 test sentences. DynaSAND makes available the full recordings and transcriptions of these interviews. Together, the DynSAND data cover the syntactic variation in the Dutch language area in the left periphery of the clause (the complementizer system and complementizer agreement), variation in subject pronoun form depending on syntactic position, subject pronoun doubling, cliticization on YES/NO, the reflexive system, fronting constructions (Wh-clauses, relative clauses, topicalization), word order and morphological variation in verb clusters, negation and quantification. The data in DiDDD (Diversity in Dutch DP Design; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/diddd/ (link is external)) were collected between 2005 and 2009 with oral and written interviews in about 200 locations in the Dutch language area, with a methodology highly parallel to DynaSAND. The data involve translations of and judgements on test sentences. For 29 interviews there are sound recordings which have been lined up with their transcriptions. The DIDDD data cover the morphosyntactic variation within nominal groups, in particular possessives, partitives, noun ellipsis, the demonstrative system, the numeral modification system, what-for constructions, quantitative er, adjectival inflection, negation and exclamatives. The data in GTRP (Goeman, Taeldeman, van Reenen Project; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/mand/database/ (link is external)) were collected between 1979 and 2000 with oral interviews in about 600 locations in the Dutch language area. Informants were asked to translate words or short sentences. Part of the transcriptions have been lined up with the sound recordings. The morphological data in GTRP include plural forms of nouns, diminutives, gender on nouns and adjectives, comparatives, superlatives, verbal inflection including participles, subject, object and possessive pronouns.

SHEBANQ: System for HEBrew Text: ANnotations for Queries and Markup

Summary

The WIVU Hebrew Text Database contains the Hebrew text of the Old Testament enriched with many linguistic features at the morpheme level up to the discourse level.

Background

The WIVU (Werkgroep Informatica Vrije Universiteit) Hebrew Text Database contains the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) version of the text of the Hebrew Bible. Portions of other Semitic languages are included as well: the Aramaic sections of the Old Testament, two Syriac versions, and annotated portions of the Syriac and Aramaic translations. All these texts have been enriched with features that primarily result from linguistic analysis. The database can be queried by means of a language that is optimized to deal with data that is modeled as objects + features. SHEBANQ builds a bridge between the linguistically annotated Hebrew Text corpus and biblical scholars by (1) making this text, including its annotations, available to scholars; (2) demonstrating how queries can function to address research questions; the query saver and the metadata added to them will be a growing repository of valuable best practices of what queries are used in addressing research questions and how they contribute to answering these questions; (3) giving textual scholarship a more empirical basis, by creating the opportunity that claims made in scholarly articles (e.g.: “this syntactic pattern is not attested elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible”) can be accompanied by the unique identifiers that refer to the saved queries that have led to the claim. The WIVU database is a resource under long-term development. New features are being added, new corrections are being made over time.

VK: Verrijkt Koninkrijk (Enriched Kingdom)

Summary

The enriched publication of the important Dutch historiographical work Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog (The Kingdom of the Netherlands in WWII) by Dr. Loe de Jong.

Background

Dr Loe de Jong’s Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog remains the most appealing history of German occupied Dutch society (1940-1945). Published between 1969 and 1991, the 14 volumes, consisting of 30 parts and 18,000 pages combine the qualities of an authoritative work for a general audience, and an inevitable point of reference for scholars.
In VK this corpus is enriched with:

Tokenization, sentence splitting, part-of-speech tagging and lemmatization (done with the FROG software from Tilburg University).
Named entity recognition (done using UvA's NE tagger (specially trained for Dutch within the Stevin DuoMan project)).
Polarity tagging (positive/negative connotation of words) (done using UvA's FietsTas software (developed for Dutch within the Stevin DuoMan project)).
Named entity reconciliation by linking to Wikipedia (done using software developed by Edgar Meij (UvA)).

Cornetto: Combinatorial and Relational Network as Toolkit for Dutch Language Technology

Summary

The data used in the Cornetto lexical resource (92K lemma's and almost 120K word meanings) are not available anymore. The best alternative data set is the Open Dutch WordNet. This data set consists of 116.992 synsets, form which 95.356 from WordNet 3.0.

Background

Open Source Dutch WordNet is a Dutch lexical semantic database. It was created by removing the proprietary content from Cornetto (http://dev.clarin.nl/node/1944) , and by using open source resources to replace this proprietary content. Open Source Dutch WordNet contains 116,992 synsets, of which 95,356 originate from WordNet 3.0 and 21,636 synsets are new synsets. The number of English synsets without Dutch synonyms is 60,743, which means that 34,613 WordNet 3.0 synsets have been filled with at least one Dutch synonym.

This project has been co-funded by the Nederlandse Taalunie (http://taalunie.org/).The Nederlandse TaalUnie and the Free University of Amsterdam share the ownership of Open Source Dutch WordNet.

GrNe: Greek-Dutch dictionary

Summary

Online dictionary (ancient) Greek - Dutch for the letter Pi. The developers estimate that a complete version of the dictionary will be finished by the end of 2015 and that it will be published by the end of 2016.

Background

A new dictionary ancient Greek - Dutch is currently under construction at Leiden University. The dictionary is being financed through the 2010 Spinoza award of project director Ineke Sluiter. For now only the letter Pi is available in the dictionary. The developers estimate that a complete version of the dictionary will be finished by the end of 2015 and that it will be published by the end of 2016.
The corpus that is being covered by this dictionary covers Greek literature from its beginnings (Homer) and consists of ca. 3.680.000 words (tokens); it includes all classical authors from the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, and a selection of later Greek (selection based on the likelihood that the text will be used by our target groups), but all of the New Testament, Lucian and Plutarch. The dictionary will eventually contain ca. 52.500 headwords. It is based on a thorough comparison of state of the art dictionaries, supplemented with the help of the material from the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae.
Greek morphology is complicated. In order to use a dictionary effectively, a rather high level of initial language competence is necessary for the user to be able to relate the word-form s/he finds in a text to the correct basic lemma form, where the definition of the word can be found. This digital dictionary however has an added ‘lemmatizer’ function, which enables the user to type in the word as found in the text and to be redirected to the correct lemma. The digital resource enables both Greek-Dutch searches and searches for the possible Greek equivalents of Dutch terms. This also makes it possible to explore the relation of semantic fields in Dutch and Greek. E.g., it is possible to locate all Greek words that have ‘courage’ as part of their definition. Furthermore, the digital resource makes it possible to locate different Greek words with the same etymological roots. And finally, the dictionary is linked to the website of the University of Chicago, where a comparison of all Greek-x dictionaries is supported. Here, one can enter a Greek word and be provided with the equivalents and definitions in all the dictionaries that are linked on this website.

FESLI: Functional elements in Specific Language Impairment

Summary

A corpus with data from monolingual and bilingual children (Dutch - Turkish) with and without Specific Language Impairment (SLI).

Background

The FESLI-data come from two NWO-sponsored projects: BiSLI and Variflex. The numbers of children included in the resources are:

12 bilingual children without language impairment (SLI)
25 monolingual children with SLI
20 bilingual children with SLI

The children´s ages ranged from 6;0 to 8:5. For more precise information about the specific age distribution in each group, the reader is referred the dissertation written by Antje Orgassa (http://dare.uva.nl/document/147433). The non-impaired children were included in the Variflex project (data collected by Elma Blom) and also used in the BiSLI project; the data from the children with SLI were exclusive to the biSLI project.

DUELME: Dutch Electronic Lexicon of Multiword Expressions

Summary

DUELME is an electronic lexicon that contains more than 5,000 Dutch multiword expressions (MWEs). The DUELME lexicon is suitable for theoretical research on multiword expressions as well as for use in NLP systems. Multiword expressions with similar syntactic patterns are grouped in equivalence classes. Semantic restrictions on variable arguments are encoded. A search interface for this database is available here

Background

DuELME (Dutch Electronic Lexicon of Multiword Expressions) is one of the results of the project Identification and Representation of Multiword Expressions (IRME) and contains lexical descriptions of over 5,000 multiword expressions (MWEs). The lexical descriptions boast to be highly theory- and implementation-neutral. The lexicon is primarily intended for the use in various NLP systems.
The DuELME-LMF project has been carried out within the CLARIN-NL programme. It is based on the IRME project funded by STEVIN and hosted by the INL. If you wish to obtain the complete lexicon in XML format, please contact the the Dutch-Flemish HLT Agency (TST-Centrale); an initiative of the Dutch Language Union.

VU-DNC: VU Diachronic Newspaper Corpus

Summary

VU-DNC is a unique diachronic corpus of Dutch newspaper articles from five major Dutch newspapers from 1950/1951 and 2002 (2 MW). The VU-DNC has been annotated for quotations, which enables the researcher to differentiate between the words directly under responsibility of the journalist.

Background

VU-DNC contains two news subcorpora, one containing old newspaper texts from 1950 and 1951 from five major national Dutch newspapers, and one containing new newspaper texts from 2002 from the same five newspapers. The articles originate from the front page, domestic news, foreign news, financial news, culture, opinion, sports, and science sections from Algemeen Dagblad, NRC Handelsblad, de Telegraaf, Trouw and de Volkskrant (1950/1: 931,574 words, 3615 texts; 2002: 971,059 words, 3003 texts). The texts from 1950 and 1951 were scanned, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), from original paper copies; the 2002 texts were extracted from the international newspaper database LexisNexis.
The VU-DNC has been developed at the Department of Language and Communication, Faculty of Arts, of the VU University, under supervision of prof.dr. Wilbert Spooren, an accomplished researcher in discourse studies, with many years of experience in using and compiling corpora, such as the VU-chat-corpus. Kirsten Vis was responsible for the compilation of the VU-DNC, from the design and compilation criteria to the actual realization of the corpus.
The VU-DNC makes it possible to address a variety of research questions on diachronic change. From a historical perspective, developments over time within and between the five major newspapers can be better addressed, e.g. were the differences between the type of news events the major newspapers reported on greater in the more segregated society of the 1950s than they are now? From the perspective of communication and media studies, research questions into the diachronic changes in journalistic practice can be better addressed, for example questions regarding the framing of the news: do journalists nowadays use different framing devices than in 1950? From a (historical) linguistic perspective, research questions can be answered that address the recent linguistic developments in Dutch news, varied over type of article or section and/or newspaper. For example: has the language use in newspapers become more subjective, is there a difference in this development between hard news texts and other types of texts, and is it stronger in popular newspapers than in so-called ‘serious’ newspapers?
