Background

The Nederlab project aims to bring together all digitized texts relevant to Dutch national heritage, the history of Dutch language and culture (c. 800 -present) in one user-friendly and tool-enriched open access web interface, allowing scholars to simultaneously search and analyze data from texts spanning the full recorded history of the Netherlands, its language and culture. The project builds on various initiatives: for corpora Nederlab collaborates with the scientific libraries and institutions, for infrastructure with CLARIN (and CLARIAH), for tools with eHumanities programmes such as Catch, IMPACT and CLARIN (TICCL, frog).

Nederlab offers a large number of search options with which researchers can find the occurrence of a particular term in a particular corpus or subcorpus. It also offers visualization of search results through line graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs, or scatter graphs. Furthermore, this online lab will offer a large set of tools, like tokenization tools, tools for spelling normalization, PoS-tagging tools , lemmatization tools, a computational historical lexicon and indices. Also, the use of (semi-) automatic syntactic parsing, tools for text mining, data mining and sentiment mining, Named Entity Recognition tools, coreference resolution tools, plagiarism detection tools, paraphrase detection tools and cartographical tools is offered

The first version of Nederlab was launched in early 2015, it’ll be expanded until the end of 2017. Nederlab is financed by NWO, KNAW, CLARIAH and CLARIN-NL.

PILNAR: Pilgrimage Narratives - a corpus for studying the profile of the modern pilgrim

Summary

A corpus of pilgrimage narratives with Dutch texts written after ca. 2000 that present the thoughts and impressions of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. The PILNAR corpus is a source for research for a variety of (sub)disciplines: culture studies, ritual and religious studies, but also media and e-culture studies (cf the use of blogs and other social media for the self-presentation of experiences). Only for authorized users.

Background

The PILNAR corpus contains six subcorpora:

Volumes of De Jacobsstaf 1986-: 84 pdf files
Volumes of De Pelgrim of the Flemish Society of Santiago de Compostella nos. 1-4 (16mb, 10mb, 16mb) (both societies work collaborate closely)
Volumes of Ultreia, a newsletter; 3 issues available now: January, February, April 2011
Pilgrimage accounts and blogs by pilgrims available via the Societies Netherlands: circa 140 files; Flemish: circa 138 files
A corpus of pilgrimage narratives compiled on the occasion of the exhibition in Museum Catharijneconvent held in collaboration with the Society: www.pelgrimsverhalen.nl; already on the site now: about 180 fields (as of July 2011).
Accounts and narratives that come in after a specially targeted notice via the site and periodical by the Society (De Jacobsstaf), with perhaps a Flemish companion piece (De Pelgrim).

Summary

The MIMORE tool enables researchers to investigate morphosyntactic variation in the Dutch dialects by searching three related databases with a common on-line search engine. The three databases involved are also available as XML: DynaSAND (the dynamic syntactic atlas of the Dutch dialects), DiDDD (Diversity in Dutch DP Design) and GTRP (Goeman, Taeldeman, van Reenen Project).

Background

The data in DynaSAND, the dynamic syntactic atlas of the Dutch dialects (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/sand/ (link is external)), were collected between 2000 and 2005 by oral interviews (fieldwork and telephone) in about 300 locations across The Netherlands, Belgium and a small part of north-west France. Dialect speakers were asked to judge and/or translate some 150 test sentences. DynaSAND makes available the full recordings and transcriptions of these interviews. Together, the DynSAND data cover the syntactic variation in the Dutch language area in the left periphery of the clause (the complementizer system and complementizer agreement), variation in subject pronoun form depending on syntactic position, subject pronoun doubling, cliticization on YES/NO, the reflexive system, fronting constructions (Wh-clauses, relative clauses, topicalization), word order and morphological variation in verb clusters, negation and quantification. The data in DiDDD (Diversity in Dutch DP Design; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/diddd/ (link is external)) were collected between 2005 and 2009 with oral and written interviews in about 200 locations in the Dutch language area, with a methodology highly parallel to DynaSAND. The data involve translations of and judgements on test sentences. For 29 interviews there are sound recordings which have been lined up with their transcriptions. The DIDDD data cover the morphosyntactic variation within nominal groups, in particular possessives, partitives, noun ellipsis, the demonstrative system, the numeral modification system, what-for constructions, quantitative er, adjectival inflection, negation and exclamatives. The data in GTRP (Goeman, Taeldeman, van Reenen Project; http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/mand/database/ (link is external)) were collected between 1979 and 2000 with oral interviews in about 600 locations in the Dutch language area. Informants were asked to translate words or short sentences. Part of the transcriptions have been lined up with the sound recordings. The morphological data in GTRP include plural forms of nouns, diminutives, gender on nouns and adjectives, comparatives, superlatives, verbal inflection including participles, subject, object and possessive pronouns.

CKCC - Scholarly Letters

Summary

The CKCC service is build around a corpus of 20.000 letters of scholars who lived in the 17th-century Dutch Republic. Circulation of Knowledge and Learned Practices in the 17th-century Dutch Republic (CKCC) investigates the circulation of knowledge in the 17th-century Dutch Republic. A multi-disciplinary project team consisting of historians, literature researchers, linguists and computer scientists works together in this project and created a web-based Humanities’ Collaboratory on Correspondences. This project, is carried out thanks to a NWO Medium investment subsidy and with CLARIN subsidies to make the resources available withing the CLARIN domain.

Background

A consortium of Dutch universities and cultural heritage institutions is building a web-based collaboratory (an online space for asynchronous collaboration) around a corpus of 20.000 letters of scholars who lived in the 17th-century Dutch Republic to answer the research question: how did knowledge circulate in the 17th century? Hereto, it will be necessary to analyze this large amount of correspondence systematically. CKCC is a content processing workflow that consists of iterative cycles of conceptual analysis, enrichment with several layers of annotation and visualization, based on this (extendable) corpus. With advice from CLARIN-EU in the first stage of the project a demonstrator was developed which implements techniques of keyword extraction. The second stage consists of evaluating existing more complex tools en techniques that can tackle one or more aspects of the targeted grammatical, content-related, and network complexity analysis, annotation, and visualization. The phase shall identify a set of tools that can be readily utilized in CKCC, as well as tools that need to be adapted or extended to the needs of CKCC; in short, by the end of this phase resources, requirements and risks shall become clear.

DSS: Dutch Ships and Sailors

Summary

A tool chain and methodology for converting legacy datasets in the area of maritime history. Set up to facilitate over 25 data sets, the initial population consists of 4 selected maritime-historical datasets.

Background

The maritime industry has been central to regional and global economic, social and cultural exchange. It is also one of the best historically documented sectors of human activity. Many aspects of it have been recorded by shipping companies, governments, newspapers and other institutions. In the past few decades, much of the data in the preserved historical source material has been digitized. Among the most interesting data are those on shipping movement and crew members. The Dutch Republic in the 17th and 18th centuries had to rely to a large extent on immigration to man its fleet. Especially in Asian waters, it also relied on Asian crews.

Often information that deals with the same shipping movements and crew composition is spread over several historical sources and hence over several databases. The data often refers to the same ‘places’, ‘ships’, ‘persons’ and ‘events’. By linking the different available databases, the data complements and amplifies each other, and new research possibilities open up. Ideally, we would want to follow a ship from port to port, and crew members pursuing their careers from ship to ship.

The Dutch Ships and Sailors project provides a tool chain and methodology for converting legacy datasets. The infrastructure includes common vocabularies to normalize and enrich existing data. Links are established between the datasets and to other relevant datasets. In doing so, Dutch Ships and Sailors builds a (semantic) web-based structure that aims to function as a future platform and infrastructure for maritime historical datasets. Initially, this portal contains the following datasets:

Historische Kranten of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek;
The Monsterrollen databases contains elaborate data on the crew composition of ships from the Northern Netherlands (c. 1800-1930) and provides information on the sailors involved, such as the places of origin, wage and age;
The databases VOC Opvarenden, providing extensive data on crews of VOC ships leaving the Republic;
The database Dutch-Asiatic Shipping, providing data on all inter-continental voyages of VOC ships;
The database Generale Zeemonsterrollen, providing data on the crew composition and sometimes location of VOC ships stationed in Asia and not engaged in inter-continental shipping.

SHEBANQ: System for HEBrew Text: ANnotations for Queries and Markup

Summary

The WIVU Hebrew Text Database contains the Hebrew text of the Old Testament enriched with many linguistic features at the morpheme level up to the discourse level.

Background

The WIVU (Werkgroep Informatica Vrije Universiteit) Hebrew Text Database contains the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) version of the text of the Hebrew Bible. Portions of other Semitic languages are included as well: the Aramaic sections of the Old Testament, two Syriac versions, and annotated portions of the Syriac and Aramaic translations. All these texts have been enriched with features that primarily result from linguistic analysis. The database can be queried by means of a language that is optimized to deal with data that is modeled as objects + features. SHEBANQ builds a bridge between the linguistically annotated Hebrew Text corpus and biblical scholars by (1) making this text, including its annotations, available to scholars; (2) demonstrating how queries can function to address research questions; the query saver and the metadata added to them will be a growing repository of valuable best practices of what queries are used in addressing research questions and how they contribute to answering these questions; (3) giving textual scholarship a more empirical basis, by creating the opportunity that claims made in scholarly articles (e.g.: “this syntactic pattern is not attested elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible”) can be accompanied by the unique identifiers that refer to the saved queries that have led to the claim. The WIVU database is a resource under long-term development. New features are being added, new corrections are being made over time.

e-BNM+: Linked Data on Middle Dutch Sources Kept Worldwide

The curated e-BNM collection of textual, codicological and historical information about thousands of Middle Dutch manuscripts kept world wide.

Background

The Bibliotheca Neerlandica Manuscripta (BNM) collects and makes available information on medieval manuscripts produced in the Netherlands regardless where they are kept. Documentation activities concentrate on the Middle-Dutch texts and their authors that have been transmitted in these manuscripts, on the individuals and institutions that have been involved in the manuscript production (scribes, illuminators, monasteries) and on the former and present manuscript owners.
Since 1991 two-thirds of this ‘paper’ information, checked and supplemented with information from recent publications, has been converted into electronic data and incorporated in a database (e-BNM), which can be searched online. In 2013 this database was converted into a flexible datastructure that turned e-BNM into a key open access resource to which many other resources can easily be linked.
The new eBNM+:

will be freely accessible for every user, anywhere in the world;
can easily implement new contributions or corrections by scientists;
can easily be linked to related databases - in the near future cross searching several databases in one interface will be possible;
will be prepared for the inclusion of new data, like:
- research data on Middle Dutch texts that were printed before 1541 and the books in which they are preserved;
- articles on Middle Dutch texts and their authors (associated with the current thesaurised information).
